SoFoBoMo 09 pt1: roll 2

The proofs from the second roll. All scans are now done, just got the inversions to get through for the rest.

  1. Impressive! I had a difficult time choosing the ones I liked the best. I picked eight and feel that I was mean in not choosing more - 801, 803, 806, 807, 813, 815, 830 and 834 ... I hope that you realise that there are a LOT of good photos in this roll for the project.

You mentioned on Amy's site about the size of the PDF file (18 MB) being rather large. My PDF file came in at 13 MB and there were only 80 pages with 37 photos. I was actually amazed that Amy's file was so small with 100 photos in a 150 pages. How big will your book be?

  2. Robert, the biggest problem with selection is getting them to fit. I've only 144 frames to work with, which ought to yield about 40-50 good ones. But then from a typical first pass about a third don't fit with what I want, or are too similar. that makes numbers tight.

As for pdf sizes, you should be able to achieve 100-150kB per image for the overall book size 9size of non-image pages is minimal) and have good quality for on-screen display. For example i checked 3 of my online books: ranging from 58-122 pages, 38-78 images. 3.7-5.77MB (giving 33-70kB per page, 52-155kB per image).
Most make the mistake of too much resolution and too little compression.

  3. Your proof sheets serve as a wonderfully effective "tease" and build anicipation for your book. I look forward to seeing it.

I'm one of those who needs to be reminded that I have to opt for sufficient compression and not be afraid to drop resolution a bit. The benchmark for size of each image is particularly helpful.
